Critical Thinking A-level is a course designed to promote the skill of critical thinking. Although it is generally regarded as useful skill to have developed as part of your overall education, it is not usually included in UCAS offers because of its lack of subject content and is seen as 'light weight' as a standalone subject. Thus it shares a similar status to General Studies. OCR offers Critical Thinking at both AS and A2 levels, as well as an AEA. AQA also offers Critical Thinking as an A-Level since 2008. There has recently been a fall in its popularity as an A level subject, presumably because few Universities accept it, and AQA will not be offering it after June 2014. The A-level Critical Thinking (H052 for AS, H452 for A-level) is composed as follows: Unit 1, Introduction to Critical Thinking (F501) involves the language of reasoning and credibility assessment. It is a 1 hour exam, and is worth 40% of the AS and 20% of the A-level. Unit 2, Assessing and Developing Argument (F502) involves the analysis and evaluation of arguments, and developing your own "reasoned" arguments. Critical thinking and logic have been at the heart of philosophy since Aristotle. As a professional philosopher, I have taught formal logic, philosophical logic and the theory of knowledge at the University of Oxford, and for the University of London's External Philosophy Program. These logical skills are the foundation for my critical thinking tuition for the various Oxbridge admissions tests: I'm also an A-level Critical Thinking tutor (OCR), an A-level Thinking Skills tutor (CIE). My critical thinking tuition combines assignments (textual readings and exercises) with tutorials using Skype or the phone. The Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) is increasingly used by organisations, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, as part of their selection procedures. Appicants for the University of Oxford Philosophy and Psychology (PP) and Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) degrees, for example, are required to take the Oxford TSA. The Cambridge and Oxford TSAs typically involve 2 tests: a multiple-choice test; and a 30-minute short essay. Half of the multiple-choice questions are critical thinking problems.

Critical Thinking is a form of reflective reasoning that analyses and evaluates information and arguments by applying a range of intellectual skills in order to reach clear, logical and coherent judgements within a given context. The study of Critical Thinking will equip students with reasoning skills to use in life, work and further academic study. OCR has already introduced an A-level in critical thinking. Under latest plans, a new "Level 2 qualification" will enable schoolchildren to gain the equivalent of an A* to C grade GCSE in the subject. According to the course syllabus, the qualification will complement mainstream subjects, by allowing pupils to "develop a conscious, critical awareness of the full range of skills which together constitute higher forms of thinking". Pupils are expected to develop an understanding of 10 "skills", said OCR, including evaluating evidence, decision making, problem solving and creative thinking.
